Die Darstellung der Welt ist immer abhängig von unserer individuellen Wahrnehmung und deshalb sind Repräsentationen immer als ein Konstrukt unseres eigenen Geistes zu sehen. Diese Arbeit befasst sich mit der Darstellung von Moslems, des Islams und der Araber in den heutigen amerikanischen Medien. Edward Said’s Orientalism und Samuel Huntington’s Clash of Civilization sind zwei theoretische Ansätze, die als Basis für die Diskussion des Amerikanischen Orientalismus und dessen Auswirkungen auf das gesellschaftliche Bild von Moslems dienen. Die Bedrohung der radikal islamistischen Gruppen ist allgegenwärtig und spielt eine wichtige Rolle in der amerikanischen Politik und des Sicherheitsstaates. Ihre Gegenwart macht es für amerikanische Moslems unmöglich, auf wertfreie und nicht verurteilende Reaktionen zu treffen. Terroristische Anschläge in Europa und Amerika werfen das ernstzunehmende Phänomen der Besorgnis vor einheimischen Terroristen auf. Der empirische Teil der Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Darstellung von Islam und Moslems in der amerikanischen TV-Serie Homeland. Deren Repräsentation wird von Kritikern sehr unterschiedlich gesehen. Behauptungen welche besagen, dass die Show eine große Menge an islamophoben Elementen beinhaltet und die Idee vermittelt, dass Terrorismus und Islam nicht getrennt werden können, lassen jene Stimmen die gegenteilig argumentieren verstummen. Stereotypische Szenen und Merkmale, als auch die Reaktionen der Zuseher auf die ihnen präsentierten Bilder und dem dargestellten Gedankengut, werden genau unter die Lupe genommen. Am Ende der Arbeit werden anhand einer ausgewählten Szene aus Homeland kinematographische als auch religiöser Elemente genau geprüft.

The way the world is represented to us, or through us, always depends on our individual perceptions. Representations are always to be looked at as a construct of our mindset. The thesis is concerned with the ways Muslims, Islam and Arabs are represented in today’s American media. By discussing Edward Said’s Orientalism and Samuel Huntington’s Clash of Civilization the concept of American Orientalism and its effects on society’s image of Muslims is investigated. The threat of radical Isalmistic groups is omnipresent and plays an important role in American politics and homeland security. They make it quite impossible for American-Muslims not to be regarded with prejudice and misjudgement on the basis of their Islamic confession. Furthermore, the current fear of terrorist attacks on Europe and America makes it necessary to consider the anxiety of home-grown terrorists as a newly developed phenomenon. The empirical approach to this topic is concerned with the ways Islam and Muslims are represented in the American TV-series Homeland. Their portrayal in the series is seen very differently by critics. Claims, which argue that the show incorporates a vast amount of islamophobic elements and conveys the notion that terrorism cannot be separated from Islam, have drowned voices which suggest otherwise. Stereotypical scenes and features appearing in the show are looked at, as well as the ways viewers react, to images or ideas presented to them. By scrutinizing a scene of the Homeland in the end of the thesis, cinematographic aspects, as well as representational aspects of religious elements, will be investigated.
