'On the background of the reproduction theory of Pierre Bourdieu this contribution analyzes the hierarchy of the fields of study in dependency of the social origin of the students between 1985 and 2004. Additionally the relative impact of the students' motivation on the choice of a field of study is surveyed. With data of the working group on university research (Konstanz) multinomial logit models are computed. It can be shown that there are significant effects of the social origin on the choice of a field of study. However, these effects are relatively week compared to the motivation.'
