"Against the background of existing patterns of recruitment within academia, this article investigates the socio-structural composition of professors in the field of sociology. This investigation is based upon a full survey of professors at sociological departments at German universities and a number of selected research institutes. The relevant socio-structural parameters of interest are the share of female professors, the share of foreign professors, the age distribution, the relationship between personnel and different locations in East and West Germany, and the role of different locations in terms of progressive stages of professional development (eg., dissertation and habilitation). In order to capture changes over time, we differentiate the aforementioned categories according to birth cohorts. Overall, despite a large share of newly-recruited professors and excluding the evident trend towards the feminization of the sociological profession, one observes a great structural stability between cohorts. This, in turn, can be traced back to the influence of dominant recruitment patterns. In particular, according to the analyzed indicators, the internationalization and the integration of East Germans into the academic system has hitherto been unsuccessful."
