Abstract (English)
This thesis illuminates open source technology against the background of sustainability management in nonprofit organizations (NPO). The focus of this thesis is set on the potential for a sustainability information system based on open source technology in the third sector. In order to find this out, together with six nonprofit organizations a real open source project was launched and examined. Only if a NPO participates in an open source a project about a sustainability information system, it can make a realistic evaluation of the use of this technology ? that?s the assumption.
The initial prototype of the project was based on a deep analysis of the requirements to an optimal sustainability information system for NPOs. The requirement analysis was accomplished with diverse explorative methods (expert interview, expert rounds, on-line survey). The goal hereby was to define and implement a solution, which donates the greatest possible use to the organizations and motivates them for a pro-active and long-term participation in the project.
Fundamentally a very high suitability of open source technology for the third sector can be determined - in particular for the context of the sustainability management. Resulting from the final evaluation of the project and the data out of the explorative examination, different scenarios for market potential and sales potential were determined. In the observed sample a market potential of 57% and an average sale potential of 21.4% of the market potential could be determined.
Abstract (German)
Die vorliegende Arbeit beleuchtet die Open Source Technologie vor dem Hintergrund des Nachhaltigkeitsmanagements in Nonprofit Organisationen (NPO). Im Fokus der Arbeit steht die Antwort auf die Frage, wie hoch das Potenzial für ein Nachhaltigkeitsmanagementsystem auf Basis von Open Source Technologie im dritten Sektor ist. Um dies herauszufinden, wurde zusammen mit sechs Nonprofit Organisationen ein reales Open Source Projekt umgesetzt und dieses Projekt beforscht. Nur wenn eine NPO an einem Open Source Projekt zu einem Nachhaltigkeitsinformationssystem teilgenommen hat, kann sie auch eine realistische Evaluation des Nutzens dieser Technologie abgeben ? so lautet die Annahme.
Der initiale Prototyp des Projekts beruhte auf einer fundierten Analyse der Anforderungen an ein optimales Nachhaltigkeitsinformationssystem für NPOs. Die Anforderungsanalyse wurde mit Hilfe verschiedenster explorativer Methoden (Experteninterviews, Expertenrunden, Online-Befragung) durchgeführt. Ziel hierbei war es eine Lösung, welche den Organisationen von Anfang an den grösstmöglichen Nutzen stiftet und sie zu einer proaktiven und langfristigen Teilnahme am Projekt animiert, zu definieren und anschliessend umzusetzen.
Grundsätzlich lässt sich eine sehr hohe Eignung der Open Source Technologie für den dritten Sektor feststellen ? insbesondere für den Kontext des Nachhaltigkeitsmanagements. Aus der Abschlussevaluation des Projekts und den Daten aus der explorativen Erhebung wurden verschiedene Szenarios für Markt- und Absatzpotenziale ermittelt. In der beobachteten Stichprobe konnte ein Marktpotenzial von 57% und ein durchschnittliches Absatzpotenzial von 21,4% des Marktpotenzials ermittelt werden.
