Abstract

The archaeological investigations carried out between 1991 and 1994 in the village of Pocreaca, Schitu Duca, Iasi County, intended to examine the fortification from the First Iron Age belonging to the Cozia culture. On the occasion of these excavations, a Neolithic settlement belonging to the Cucuteni A3 culture was also identified. Details of the fortress belonging to the First Iron Age were published, while the results of the investigations of the Neolithic settlement are to be included in the current volume. The diggings brought to light a burnt clay platform of a house and a rich archaeological material from the earth layer or from waste dumps. As for ceramics, numerous fragments were found. Restored or not, they offer a rich inventory of vessel shapes and paintings in white, black and red or of not-painted vessels. Painted ceramics include glasses, bowls, pots, support vessels, bi-truncated cone-shaped vessels with high support etc. There are also anthropomorphic idols, both feminine and masculine, and zoomorphic idols, representing domestic animals. Tools are mainly pieces in knapped flint but there are also axes of polished grit stone. The settlement belongs to the well-represented group of Cucuteni settlements east of the Siret River, dating from the Cucuteni A phase, third stage.
