Translation of abstract (English)

The paintings in the Orthodox Church of the Annunciation in Suprasl, situated near Bialystok (Poland), were probably executed between 1532 and 1557. The church was destroyed in 1944 by German soldiers. The dominating idea in the paintings was the Incarnation of God, illustrated variously, referring to the dedication of the church – The Annunciation to the Blessed Virgin Mary. In numerous places the authors of the programme or its executors demonstrated great originality, for instead of repeating the well-known and generally used iconographic prototypes they modified those already in existence or drew from diverse, sometimes distant, sources. A survey of themes, and especially of a very developed hagiographic one, proves that the origins of many scenes and of single figures may only be explained by a familiarity with Balkan Late- and Post-Byzantine art.
