Abstract
Im Oktober 1829 wurden zwei Abschnitte der Hofgartenarkaden mit sechzehn Wandbildern zur bayerischen Geschichte für das Publikum geöffnet – gemalt von Schülern von Peter Cornelius. Im ersten Teil dieser Studie steht der ehemalige Gesamtdekor im Zentrum. Zum Arbeitsablauf von 1826 bis 1829 erlauben neu ausgewertete Quellen interessante Ergänzungen zum bisherigen Wissensstand. Erstmals wird die ursprüngliche Deckenbemalung genauer vorgestellt. Ein Schriftwechsel zwischen Cornelius und König Ludwig I. gibt Einblick in die Genese der Bild-Titel. Zeitgenössische Beschreibungen und Kritiken erlauben außerdem zumindest eine gewisse Vorstellung der heute verlorenen Allegorien. Die unterschiedliche Qualität der heute sichtbaren Wandbilder drängt zudem die Frage nach dem Erhaltungszustand auf. Im zweiten Teil werden daher erstmals ausführlich die Zerstörungen und „Restaurierungen“ bis zum letzten großen Eingriff 1971/72 behandelt. Im dritten Teil zeigt dann das exemplarisch herausgegriffene Bild zur bayerischen Verfassung bewusste Abweichungen vom tatsächlichen Geschehen. Dabei wird die Notwendigkeit deutlich, bei einer etwaigen gleichmäßigen Behandlung aller Historienbilder das Gemalte jeweils kritisch sowohl mit den historischen Fakten als auch mit dem damaligen Geschichtswissen zu vergleichen. Abschließend bietet der vierte Teil Fotografien der erhaltenen Historienbilder und Allegorien mit Informationen zu Technik und Maßen, zum Zustand und ursprünglichem Kontext, zu den dargestellten Inhalten, zur Genese des Bildtitels und zum Maler.
Translation of abstract (English)
In October 1829 two parts of the Hofgarten Arcades with sixteen murals showing major events of Bavarian History were inaugurated – painted by scholars of Peter Cornelius. Focus of the first part of this study is the former overall decoration. Recently analyzed sources regarding the work process from 1826 until 1829 permit interesting supplements to the knowledge we had so far. For the first time there is a more detailed description of the original ornamental paining of the ceiling. Letters exchanged between Cornelius and king Ludwig I. offer insight in the genesis of the paintings’ titles. In addition, at least, contemporary descriptions and reviews put across a certain idea of the allegories which are lost these days. Furthermore, the difference in quality of the murals visible today raises the question of the condition they are preserved in. For this reason, in the second part, for the first time the destruction and „restorations“, up to the last major “treatment” in 1971/72, are discussed in detail. In the third part the painting on the subject of the Bavarian constitution which was picked as an example shows intended deviations from the actual events. Here, it becomes evident that, when treating all historic paintings more or less the same, it becomes necessary to critically compare the picture with the historic facts as well as with the knowledge of history at the time. Finally the fourth part offers photographs of the historic paintings preserved and allegories, together with information regarding technique and measurements, condition and original context, the contents depicted, the genesis of the picture’s title, and the painter.
