Abstract

Translation of abstract (English)

The article is about illustrations of Kiel (called in Latin Chilonium) in graphic art from the earliest depictions made by Braun-Hogenberg for his Civitates orbis terrarium up to the 18th century. Braun's correspondence with Heinrich Rantzau, a scientist and administrator of Kiel at that time, helped him to get hold of the pictorial material. Rantzau ordered a city view from the engraver Johann Greve in Hamburg. Braun disliked it but gave order to make a slightly changed copy for his collection. The Greve original survives in Rantzau's personal copy of Braun-Hogenberg, now in the Stadtbibliothek Augsburg. All later illustrations depend heavily on the Braun-Hogenberg veduta, the only remarkable one is by Matthäus Merian (for Werdenhagens De rebus publicis Hanseaticis tractatus, Frankfurt 1641). Apart from two small city panorama on a map (made by Homann's heirs before 1742) there is no realistic one in graphic arts. Very few other items about the town as an oil painting and a few other maps are preserved.
