Abstract

Translation of abstract (English)

The essay sets table linens with the motif of the "well-laid table" in the context - in both form and content - of religious and secular depictions of meals. Under the influence of Dutch still-life painting, the banquet theme reached its peak as a damask pattern around and after 1600. During the 18th century, like many other damask motifs, it was also employed for printed textiles. A printed tablecloth of the 18th century from the holdings of the Germanisches Nationalmuseum that is ornamented with tableware, food and aphorisms was the starting point for this study. The Christian epigrams give the composition, which is considerably simplified in comparison to earlier damask patterns, a didactic-religious orientation. At the same time, the banquet theme that had always been situated somewhere between representation of status and Christian symbolism, reached new social strata via quickly and economically produced printed textiles.
