Abstract
Die Romanische Basilika Sankt Gallus in Brenz (Bundesland Baden-Württemberg, Kreis Heidenheim) zeigt an ihren Außenseiten in den Bogenfriesen von Langhaus, Seitenschiffen, Paradies und Chor insgesamt 180 Reliefs und 173 skulpturierte Konsolen. Es finden sich Tiere (Vögel, Löwen, Bären, Reptilien), Pflanzen, Ornamente, Menschen (teils in Jagdszenen aber auch Feldarbeit), aber auch „seltsame“ Kreaturen, die Drachen oder Teufeln ähneln. Ähnliches, nur „meist“ als Kopfskulptur, findet sich an den Konsolen. Haben diese Reliefs und Konsolen eine Bedeutung, mehr als nur purer Schmuck? Sicherlich. Uns interessierten zwei Dinge: Erstens, was ist da eigentlich zu sehen, gibt es eine gewisse „Systematik“ in diesen Reliefs; und Zweitens: Sind diese Reliefs und Konsolen wahllos verteilt, oder finden sich Schwerpunkte, vielleicht sogar den Bedeutungen der vier Himmelsrichtungen folgend – und wenn ja, wie ist sie. Das Ergebnis ist in beiderlei Hinsicht mehr als nur trockenes Zahlenwerk, denn neben einer Kartographierung haben wir auch jede einzelnes Relief und Konsole dargestellt, so dass sich jeder selbst ein Bild machen kann. Haben uns unsere Vorfahren ein Rätsel gesandt? Ja, aber ein hoch aktuelles, eigentlich eine Botschaft an den Menschen von heute - denn haben wir es geschafft, das Dunkle und Böse zu besiegen?
Translation of abstract (English)
The Romanesque Basilica of St. Gallus at Brenz (Rural District of Heidenheim - Federal State of Baden-Württemberg) does show at the outer side of nave, aisle, paradise and choir in total 180 reliefs and 173 sculptured consoles of humans, animals, plants and “creatures”, and some of them seem to come out of hells gate then. Are these reliefs and consoles pure decoration, or is there something more “behind”? We are sure, it is the latter. Interested of “what” is shown by this reliefs (is there a systematic or classification behind) and “ where” they are located (is there also a system in the background or are they really placed by random, “just for fun” ?), we pictured every of these reliefs and consoles and seek for answers. The result, in both cases, is most interesting. The maps are based on pure numbers, at first. But then they offer the scheme, the whole “thing” is based on, and the outcome is interesting and surprising both. Combined with the single pictures of all reliefs and consoles, there are correlations; some of them following the old Christian meaning of the four directions, and some others in a much more surprising way. By that, we are sure that we haven´t disenchanted the riddle of our ancient progenitors in total – but what we also found is a massage, a message into the future, in our and probably the one of our successors. The thing is: Have we been successful in defending the darkness, in defeating the evil in our time?
