Abstract

Translation of abstract (English)

This work focuses on typical painting motives of Catel from his Italian period. Famous paintings from museums (Crown Prince Ludwig in the pub/Pinakothek Munich and Schinkel in Naples/National Gallery Berlin) as well as less known paintings from the art trade and private property are examined. In 1811 he moved to Italy, and there he developed his characteristic painting style which made him successful. The importance of some of his paintings is examined in detail in the context of the different categories and their tradition. He differentiated stylistically from most of the contemporary painters who stayed in Italy, such as the group of the "Nazarener" and Koch. He specialized in landscapes with staffage, buildings and genre paintings knowing how to insert those varying motives into effective light atmospheres. The portraits and motives from literary patterns represent a special status. His trademark was interiors with a view to the landscape, where he achieved special effects due to the contrasts of a dark interior and the outside flooded with light. With his descriptions of the daily life and the festivals of the locals he emphasized the idyllic and harmonious character of that epoch and created an important contribution to the painting of the Romantic period in Italy.
