Abstract

Der vorliegende Essay stellt ein Ausstellungsmöbel in den Mittelpunkt, das meist Teil der Inszenierung, jedoch selten Thema der Interpretation ist. Betrachtet werden die Narrative des Sockels innerhalb der Ausstellung Model Malady, die Shahryar Nashat 2016 im Portikus in Frankfurt am Main zeigte. Zunächst wird anhand der Positionierung der Kunstwerke und ihrer Sockelungen im Raum analysiert, welchen Einfluss sie auf die Rolle der Betrachtenden ausüben. In einem zweiten Schritt fällt der Blick auf die Narrative, die die Materialität der Sockel, ihre Beschaffenheit und ihre Ausrichtung zueinander offenbaren.

Translation of abstract (English)

The essay focuses on a very particular piece of exhibition equipment. The plinth forms part of most display infrastructure, but is rarely itself subject to interpretation. The analysis focuses on the 2016 exhibition Model Malady by Shahryar Nashat for Portikus in Frankfurt. It starts by examining how artworks are positioned and the spatial implications of plinth placement, while interrogating the influence of „plinthing“ on the spectator and her role. The argument then turns to the narratives revealed by a close examination of plinths, in particular their form, spatial orientation, and properties as material objects.
