Abstract

The objective of the project developed at the Institute for Translation and Interpretation, at the University of Heidelberg, Germany, was linked to the need to analyze the terminology in business communication, paying particular attention to the forms of treatment in commercial correspondence. Being a relevant subject in translation studies in general, it is still little explored in the German-Portuguese language pair. In publications related to this topic, the Portuguese language is often not taken into account despite the growing business of German-speaking countries with Portuguese-speaking countries. Taking the commercial letter as the main means of communication between companies, with particular reference to import/export, it also requires an adaptation effort to the linguistic-cultural recipient where the forms of treatment and farewell formulas undoubtedly constitute a crucial component, so that good understanding is not constrained. In this context, the project aimed to work on the specific characteristics of business correspondence from specialized translation classes with learners of Portuguese at the Translation Institute (Institut für Übersetzen und Dolmetschen IÜD) coordinated jointly by the resident teacher and the visiting teacher, thus allowing the possibility of working in both directions, German-Portuguese and Portuguese-German.

Translation of abstract (German)

Der Artikel zur deutsch-portugiesischen Geschaftskorrespondenz ist das Ergebnis eines dreimonatigen Forschungsstipendiums des Programms Bolsa asppa + Gulbenkian am Institut für Übersetzen und Dolmetschen. In textsortenspezifischen Publikationen wird die portugiesische Sprache oft nicht berücksichtigt. Noch seltener sind in den einschlägigen Zeitschriften deutsch-portugiesische Beiträge vertreten. Der Beitrag befasst sich mit den textsortenspezifischen Merkmalen portugiesischer und deutscher Geschäftsbriefe im aktuellen Sprachgebrauch. Aus kontrastiver Sicht werden die wesentlichen Problembereiche beschrieben, die die spezielle Aufmerksamkeit des Translators/Textproduzenten verdienen - mit besonderem Augenmerk auf die für das Portugiesische charakteristische Komplexität der Anrede und Grußformeln. Der Beitrag enthält außerdem elf Musterübersetzungen typischer Geschäftsbriefe in der Sprachrichtung deutsch-portugiesisch sowie eine Aufstellung von zweisprachigen Routineformulierungen.
