Abstract

The aim of the study was to characterize the emotional, cognitive, behavioral and physiological aspects of social anxiety in adolescence. Method: A community sample (n = 27) and an inpatient sample (n = 23) of adolescents with low to severe social anxiety were assessed with self-report inventories, parental ratings and a behavioral assessment (role-play task). During the role-play subjective anxiety, self-evaluating thoughts, social skills and heart rate were recorded. Results: Trait social anxiety correlated with subjective anxiety and negative thoughts. There was no correlation between social fear and social skills rated by adult and adolescent observers. With regard to social anxiety there were no differences in baseline heart rate. During the role-play task the heart rate increased over time for adolescent with social phobic fear. The results are valid both for the inpatient and the non-patient adolescents. Conclusions: The phenomenon of social anxiety in adolescence seems to be similar to social anxiety in children and adults.
