Abstract

The presented doctoral thesis deals with the recrystallisation of HNIW in a time saving way by using Computer Simulations. The nitramine e-HNIW is an energetic organic substance with the highest density at the moment. Due to the fact of its cage structure e-HNIW possesses extraordinary properties, which makes it very interesting as a high explosive. At room temperature and normal pressure HNIW can crystallise in four polymorphic phases. The current crystallisation technique produces HNIW-crystals with rough and defect-rich surfaces, decreasing the mechanical stability and preventing a safe handling of the substance. The objective of this work was to develop a screening method by using Computer Simulations to find suitable solvents for producing crystals with a high polymorphic purity and a high quality in a systematical way. Therefore a data base for solvent parameters was created as a combination of experimentally obtained values and calculated ones. On the basis of these data a general screening plan was established with the factors: dipole moment, molvolumina, solvent polarity and the specific interaction energy between HNIW and solvents, calculated by Monte Carlo simulations. The screening plan includes 40 solvents, representing different combinations of solvent parameter values. e-HNIW was recrystallised in these solvents and the obtained polymorphic phases were analysed by X-ray diffraction. The solubility was determined qualitatively and the samples were tested with regard to mechanical stability. One important result was that the electrostatic interaction energy between solvent and HNIW is the most important influence factor on the solubility of HNIW. With this knowledge a special screening plan was developed to identify suitable solvents to crystallise the e-HNIW phase. Furthermore it was found, that the replacement of the hitherto used ethyl acetate by t-butyl acetate in solvent mixtures leads to higher yields of e-HNIW without the application of seed crystals. Additionally with recrystallisation processes it was possible to improve the crystal morphologies. Surprisingly it was found that HNIW stored in specific anti-solvents at higher temperatures gives crystals with lower friction sensitivity. The developed screening plan allows a systematical search for solvents and thereby saves considerably time and substance amount in contrast to conventional trial and error methods. The Monte Carlo simulation has proven as an essential tool for polymorphic screening. This method will be useful in improving the crystallisation procedures not only for energetic materials but also for other organic substances.
