Abstract

2008 wurde in der Presse ausgiebig und voller Begeisterung über das Buch von F.W. Korff „Der Klang der Pyramiden“ berichtet. In dem Vortrag werden die – größtenteils nur mühsam nachzuvollziehenden – Annahmen, Berechnungen und Schlussfolgerungen Korff´s erläutert und daran anschließend analysiert, mit den archäologischen und historischen Befunden insbesondere des Alten Reiches verglichen und abschließend bewertet. Als Ergebnis ist festzustellen, dass Korff den Versuch unternimmt, von Tonklängen ausgehend, die Abmessungen der Pyramiden wie Basislängen, Höhen und Neigungswinkel, die größtenteils über viele Jahrzehnte hinweg von verschiedenen Forschern und Ägyptologen archäologisch exakt ermittelt wurden, zu korrigieren. An verschiedenen Beispielen wird gezeigt, dass die Aussagen Korff´s nicht mit den archäologischen Befunden übereinstimmen. Die Behauptung Korff´s, die Baumeister des Alten Reiches hätten die mathematischen Kenntnisse der Griechen und die Harmonielehre von Platon gekannt und beim Pyramidenbau als Planungsbasis genutzt, muss ernstlich in Zweifel gezogen werden. Für eine derartige Annahme gibt es keinerlei historische Hinweise oder Belege.

Translation of abstract (English)

In 2008, F. W. Korff’s monograph on „The Sound of the Pyramids“ (Der Klang der Pyramiden, Platon und die Cheopspyramide – das enträtselte Weltwunder, Hildesheim 2009) was discussed extensively and with praise in numerous influential German papers. In the present contribution, a review of Korff’s publication is offered. In the process of evaluating Korff’s calculations, conclusions and underlying assumptions, some of them prove less than easy to follow. They are also compared to archaeological and historical findings mostly from the Old Kingdom. Korff’s main point is to correct the generally accepted measures of the pyramids on the basis of Ancient musical intervals transmitted in Plato’s musical theory. Most of the pyramids’ hitherto accepted measures, such as base length, height and angles of slope have been determined as exactly as possible by archaeological researchers and egyptologists over many decades. Korff starts from the assumption that mathematical knowledge and harmonics as documented in Plato’s works and Hellenistic Greek sources were already known and in use in Ancient Egypt. However, Korff’s conclusions are contradicted by archaeological evidence in several instances, and from an historical point of view, it is unlikely that the Ancient Egyptians were already familiar with mathematics and musical theory as known by the Ancient Greeks.
