Zusammenfassung

The present paper deals with a comparison of the grammatical means of expression of future events in two Slavic micro-languages in Italy: Croatian-based Molise Slavic in the south and Slovene-based Resian in the north-east. Both minority vernaculars have been influenced by their Romance contact varieties, for example, in forming additional modally differentiated future grammemes, based mainly on Italian models, as well as in using the present perfect as a future perfect. Nevertheless, there are also clear differences between the two micro-languages, explicable, in part, by the different auxiliaries for expressing their traditional future: “to want” vs. “to be.” The role of verbal aspect, temporal concord, and modality are discussed in some detail. For example, Molise Slavic uses the conditional as a future in the past. The two micro-languages express the de-obligative future by means of different auxiliaries, contrasting, however in each case with the auxiliary used for epistemic statements.
