Zusammenfassung

Qualitative & quantitative differences in the division of labor between the private for-profit & the nonprofit sectors providing public goods in France & West Germany are analyzed by examining the political & administrative culture in the government/third-sector relationship. The autonomy of the state, the nature of the dominant actors, & their style of interaction are identified as crucial variables. The cross-national comparison allows for the hypothesis that different patterns of government/third-sector linkages also shape different degrees of institutional adaptivity in a changing political & economic environment.
