In this work, I analyze the concept of "disciplinary cultures". The ideas of "culture" and "discipline", as employed in the social sciences and in recent higher education research, are elaborated in regard to the contrasting theories of Parsons and Bourdieu. The implications of these ideas are put to test by data from the encompassing empirical study "Studiensituation" (Situation of Higher Education Students) conducted by the "Arbeitsgruppe Hochschulforschung" (University of Konstanz, Germany). Methodologically, this study seeks to identify disciplinary cultures through a multitude of students orientations and experiences by using various types of cluster analysis. As predicted, teacher education came out as a clearly distinguishable disciplinary culture. However, a "culture of the natural sciences" could not be identified as unambiguously as one might expect. In general, the findings are more in line with Parsons theory than with Bourdieu s.
Zusammenfassung in einer weiteren Sprache
Das Ziel dieser Arbeit ist die Analyse des Begriffs der Fachkulturen, in Abhebung zu dem der Fächergruppen. Dazu werden dessen grundlegenden Begriffe Fach und Kultur in ihrer bisherigen Verwendung in den Sozial- und Geisteswissenschaften und seine spezifische Anwendung in der Forschung, mit Bezug zu theoretischen Einbindungen (Parsons und Bourdieu), aufgearbeitet. Auf dieser Basis werden Herleitungen zur empirischen Operationalisierung erarbeitet, die anhand eines umfangreichen Datensatzes zur Studiensituation und studentischen Orientierungen (AG Hochschulforschung, Universität Konstanz) umgesetzt werden. Als methodische Vorgabe sollen die Fachkulturen über ihre jeweiligen Angehörigen, als Träger der Kultur, definiert werden, und sie sollen auch innerhalb einzelner Fächer differenzieren können. Neben der Darstellung und Analyse der resultierenden Fachkulturen werden zusätzlich die zugrundeliegenden Indikatoren analysiert. Im Ergebnis weisen die Fachkulturen sowohl Ähnlichkeiten als auch wichtige Differenzen zu den Fächergruppen auf. So stellen sich z.B. die Lehramtsstudierende als eine eigenständige Fachkultur heraus, unabhängig vom spezifischen Fach. Dagegen bereitet es große Probleme von einer Fachkultur der Naturwissenschaften zu sprechen. Die Ergebnisse und ihre weiteren inhaltlichen Interpretationen lassen sich dabei besser mit Parsons als mit Bourdieus Aussagen in Einklang bringen.
