Zusammenfassung

Electrons on the surface of liquid 4He have been used to study the transition from a homogeneous two-dimensional charge distribution to the modulated charge density regime where the so-called dimple crystal is formed. The observation of hysteresis effects suggests that the transition is discontinuous.
