This paper puts forward an explanation of the relationship between democracy and economic growth that accounts for inconsistent finding of previous inquiries. Using a model of participation and production of public goods, it is argued that neither high nor low levels of participation produce growth-maximizing policies. This argument is tested using cross-country growth regression for a sample of 83 countries between 1975-1997. The results confirm the hypothesis that growth is highest in countries with intermediate levels of democracy.

Diese Arbeit untersucht den Einfluss der Staatsform auf das Wirtschaftswachstum. Vor dem Hintergrund eines theoretischen Modells wird argumentiert, dass zwischen Demokratie und Wachstum ein nicht-linearer Zusammenhang besteht. Weder geringe noch hohe Partizipationsgrade produzieren wachstumsmaximierende Effekte. Die empirische Überprüfung in Form einer Wachstumsregression über 83 Staaten im Zeitraum zwischen 1975 und 1997 bestätigt die vorgetragene Hypothese.
