The thesis develops an integrated architectural model for business portals with a special focus on reproducing the processes of technical sales and distribution while taking into account both new and legacy systems. Companies involved in selling and distributing technical products are increasingly facing the need to achieve a paramount position in the marketplace. To be able to do so, companies need to intensify customer contact and customer loyalty by means of processes adapted to individual customer requirements, while at the same time increasing efficiency and realizing cost savings in technical sales and distribution departments. Portals offer a technical solution for providing a homogeneous user interface and access to integrated and personalized processes. Portal based process integration requires a comprehensive architecture which takes into account also a company’s information systems infrastructure. Based on these assumptions, the thesis starts with identifying the basic characteristics of Web based portals. In parallel, the specific characteristics and tasks of technical sales departments are analyzed. Following the Software Engineering approach, the thesis investigates software architectures for creating Web based applications, such as, for example, embedded script languages, platform concepts like Java and .NET, integration architectures, portal software and portal architecture models. Shortcomings of the current situation can be identified in various respects. First of all, there is no fully elaborated architectural model for portals for technical sales and distribution available. Furthermore, there is a lack in the definition of functional requirements concerning portal related applications used by technical sales and distribution departments. And finally, portals are generally not characterized by a consistent structure in terms of software engineering. Based on these shortcomings, criteria for a later evaluation of the architectural model are developed. The basis of an architectural model for portals for technical sales and distribution is an application specific extension of a generic architectural model. So the thesis draws upon an existing approach, named Information Systems Architecture (ISA), which comprises a number of components: strategy, structural organization architecture, process architecture, application architecture, data architecture, communication architecture and infrastructure. The sub models strategy and structural organization are taken for granted, as they are implied by the concentration on the specific application field of technical sales and distribution. A main element of the process architecture is the portal process map, which identifies close-to-the-customer processes that need to be reproduced in the portal and concentrates these processes in process bundles. The application architecture describes the portal’s structure. To do so, a three-layer model consisting of portal application components, portal system components and enterprise information components is developed. This model supports both software components and independent systems which themselves can be structured according to specific layer models. The data and communication architecture contains the master data and transaction data used during the components’ runtime in a static perspective in eight basic-data models. The infrastructural architecture describes the functions necessary for the portal’s operation, among them product search, authentication and roles model, single sign-on and the personalization and individualization model. The infrastructural architecture comprises also a model for applying the abstract components to real systems. For the communication architecture, an interface and data format model is developed. The integration of the components is described by means of integration patterns specifically designed for being used in connection with portals. This part of the model contains a description of data adaptation and transformation techniques. The work closes with an UML based methodology for applying the architectural model. The thesis comprises three usage scenarios of the architectural model. The final evaluation of the applicability of the architectural model shows that the architectural model clearly meets the requirements for being used for portals in the field of technical sales and distribution.
