In today’s global markets which are characterized by increased competitive pressure highly industrialized countries, like Germany can only survive by increasing their economic innovation capacity. Especially innovative products and services which allow the conquest of new market, the early satisfaction of new customer demands and allow differentiation will enable companies in those countries to increase revenues and ensure a sufficient profitability. New technologies are a vital source for innovation in products and service. Monitoring, research and development of new technologies has therefore significantly gained importance for producing companies to seize the chances of new technologies and to avoid risks through technology substitution to remain competitive or to increase the competitive advantage. However, necessary investments in new technologies do only pay off if they are introduced in new products and processes and lead to cheaper production, more powerful products or the conquest of new markets. To avoid the risks of wrong investments and maximize the return it is indispensable for companies to plan their investments in new technologies systematically. Due to the fact that markets are increasingly dynamic and complex, characterized by discontinuities, increasing innovation dynamic and reduced product lifecycles and due to accelerating technological change, e.g. driven by convergence of technologies, the planning of technologies at an early stage of development has become more difficult and has significantly gained importance. The objective of this thesis was therefore to develop an integrative, prognosis-based procedure for strategic technology planning for products which allows companies to plan their technology investments at an early point of time. This objective comprises five goals: 1. The procedure should allow the systematic planning of technology direction decisions for product technologies already in the invention phase. 2. The procedure should allow to anticipate possible future developments of the environ-ment; it should consider potential future market segments and forecast detailed developments of product technologies. Moreover it should consider the interrelations between the three. 3. The planning of the whole product technology spectrum should be enabled by integrating technologies in different stages of the lifecycle, in different levels of detail (technology fields, individual technologies) and in different levels of application. 4. An integrative planning of objectives, paths and implementation for technology direction decisions and their integration into a technology strategy should be enabled. 5. The procedure should cover all phases of a technology planning process ranging from information collection to implementation; it should integrate alternately operative and stra-tegic corporate areas and it should integrate interrelations with other processes (e.g. corporate strategy, continuous technology intelligence). The analysis of different technology categories and of models on the evolvement of technologies showed, that planning of product technologies in the invention phase is a separate problem of technology management. The state of the art of technology planning in the re-search field of technology management made clear that strategic technology decisions (focussing on technology direction decisions), their integration to a technology strategy and the implementation planning should be fundamental results of product technology planning in the invention phase (see chapter 3). Existing technology planning processes do not consider the planning of product technologies in the invention phase sufficiently, as was shown by the analysis. They contain deficits especially in the integration of prognosis and the integrated planning of technology objectives and paths. Furthermore it was shown that existing technology intelligence approaches and single-methodology-based technology planning approaches do not support all necessary tasks of strategic technology planning processes and contain relevant deficits. The developed procedure is based on the six identified tasks of strategic technology planning processes and assigns methods to them. Information collection is supported by creativity techniques. For the analysis of markets market portfolios are applied, while system analysis, value chain analysis, creation of technology fields and technology-push/market-pull analysis are used for technology analysis. For the prognosis of the environment an intuitive scenario approach is used and information-based technology forecasting methods are supporting the technology prognosis in a discontinuous Technology Intelligence process. Option generation is supported by creativity, workshop and moderation techniques. As the evaluation task is very diverse several technology portfolio models have been developed and a prognostic evaluation of objectives was applied. Implementation planning and decision taking is sup-ported by project portfolios. The individual methods have been adapted to the specific task and linked accordingly. The structure of the procedure is based on typical planning processes and consists of five phases in a four-level model which allows a top-down/bottom-up planning approach. The levels are: objectives level, level of the technological activity field, level of technology fields and level of individual research and technology development activities. The procedure was modelled with SADT methodology in order to enable an easy implementation of the proce-dure in the organisation and to show the links between individual steps of the procedure. The application of the developed procedure showed that it is well suited for an integrative and prognosis-based planning of investments in product technologies in the invention phase. It was especially shown, that the prognosis of environmental and technological developments can be integrated at the appropriate level of detail, while the linkages and dependencies can be captured as well. Furthermore it was shown in the application, that an integrative analysis of the whole product technology spectrum is possible and that the planning results can be developed in an integrative manner by deducing objectives, paths and implementation measures for technologies and by integrating individual technology direction decisions into a technology strategy. The application at one company showed as well that the developed pro-cedure is completely and consistently feasible and practical and can be linked with adjacent corporate processes.
