The trend towards an ever-growing range of new products as well as shorter product life cycles requires flexible production machines and equipment, which can be developed in shorter time periods at continuously decreasing costs and increasing quality. In order to facilitate the needed parallelism in the development and construction process, adjustable machine structures and automation components as well as corresponding information models are required. The objective of this thesis is therefore to support component and machine manufacturers by the development of consistent, mechatronic modeling guide-lines. The essential requirements for these modeling guidelines are structured using the following three categories: cross-sectional requirements, requirements for modeling guidelines for automation components as well as for machines. The main requirements are the consistency across all disciplines, as well as the independence of individual sectors of mechanical engineering and the independence of manufacturers of automation components. Further requirements are the use of existing discipline-specific data and information models, as well as flexibility in the modeling of automation components and machine structures. The state of the art in terms of basic principles for modeling of automation components and machines, existing structure and information models as well as existing engineering solutions is evaluated based on the given requirements. This evaluation shows the deficiencies of modeling guidelines in existing engineering solutions and the lack of dependencies between the previous modeling of individual sectors and manufacturers. In order to map different types of automation components and their structures as well as information models, a conceptual information model is developed as basis for mechatronic modeling. For this purpose, a method is developed which systematically converts the existing data from automation components to a functional class structure. The aim of the established mechatronic basic structure is the cross-disciplinary mapping of interrelationships between different types of automation components and machines. These principles allow the development of an automation component model for vendor-independent mapping of automation components and systems in an integrated information model. The introduced information and energy flows within the established automation component model are used as interfaces for the modeling of various types of automation components. Thus these interfaces are used as modeling guidelines for sensor, actuator, and information processing components. Based on these information models the mapping of interdependencies between the individual automation components and the modeling of automation systems in a computer-processable class structure follows. Furthermore, an industry-independent machine model is developed based on a cross-industrial, functional structure. This machine model is defined as an object-oriented, computer-processable class structure with interfaces to the automation component model. Subsequently, four hierarchical modeling levels are defined, to provide specified modeling guidelines for component and machine manufacturers. These modeling levels allow to distinguish between the discipline- and industry-independent modeling as well as vendor-specific and machine type-specific modeling. The industrial applicability of the developed modeling guidelines was tested using a prototypical implementation of the guidelines in a mechatronic engineering tool and their usage in modeling the material supply of a production machine. Thus, the suitability of the modeling guidelines for machines, machine structures and automation components was verified.
