Management of water resources and groundwater protection requires knowledge about spreading and transport processes in the subsurface. An interdisciplinary research group has therefore pursued the goal to provide calculation methods for the transport of heat and substances in aquifers and to test these methods on applied case studies about the subsurface spreading of heat, volatile chlorinated hydrocarbons and nitrates. The research work was pursued in six individual projects at the Universities of Stuttgart, Hohenheim and Karlsruhe, and it was supplemented by three substance-oriented case studies. The primary goal was the development and testing of application-oriented numerical models for flow and transport processes in natural aquifers, which are compatible with the available protoype data. The model developments have been supplemented by corresponding developments of the measurement and exploration techniques. The results of the research projects provide information about the applicability of transport models in groundwater protection and they illuminate the role of such models as an aid in decision-making in water resources planning, in the assessment of groundwater contaminations and in the development of cleanup and management concepts. This introductory chapter describes the overall topic and research goal as well as the composition of the research group. The general frame of the research is outlined, and the specific objectives of the individual projects and of the various joint case studies are described. Also, the specific role of numerical transport models and their practical relevance for water resources management tasks is delineated.
