A manufacturing company today needs to constantly improve its engineering as the core of the value adding, in order to stay competitive. The improvement according the costs and efforts can be achieved through the optimization of the employed, linked Digital Engineering-Systems (DESystems). To realize this rationalization potential, the DE-Systems have to be specifically selected for the employing enterprise. Additionally, activities in the engineering have to be adapted to fit. The conceptual design of a new concept of the engineering activities in processes, its evaluation and comparison is currently not possible in a structured manner. To address this lack, a possibility for conceptual design and the calculation of economics of the employment of DE-Systems is presented here. A method has been developed, consisting of three phases, where the second and third phase can be iteratively repeated. The first phase contains the alignment of the method with the specific goals ofthe company as well as the analysis of the as-is situation. The analysis is the basis for a description of functions of the DE-Systems for the engineering activities in functional specification sheets. The second phase presents a structured way to select suitable DE-Systems and create a process-oriented new to-be concept for the engineering activities. In the third phase, the to-be concept is used for a quantified prognosis of effects in the activities. This prognosis is used for a calculation of economics in comparison with the as-is situation. This enables the user to derive the rationalization potentials with as less effort as possible before the real implementation. The method has been validated by designing a concept of a situation-specific Digital Engineering Framework for the set-up and first commissioning, with the selection of suitable DESystems, for the employment at a manufacturer of large production systems. A digital tool was developed for the support of the methodand employed during the validation of the method. After the analysis of the as-is situation, suitable DE-Systems, capable to fulfil the required functional specification sheets, were selected and the engineering activities newly structured in a to-be concept. The effects were shown as quantified changes, specifically in changes of cost and time efforts for the engineering activities. The fulfilment of the requirements for the method and its results could be verified and confirmed.
