In the past few years, the relevance of product construction methods has become increasing important in economic literature. In particular, the consequences of a modular product construction has moved into the forefront. This means that the general assumption is that a modular organisation structure will arise from a modular product structure in the company which is implementing this structure. This essay analyses this postulated connection under the consideration of vertical integration decisions. First of all, the subject of vertical disintegration through a module product structure is elaborated to examine it in view of established theories of the firm on one hand and engineering methods on the other hand. The critical comparison comes to the conclusion that the disintegration theory in literature is formulated in too general a way for an empirical falsifiable inspection. In conclusion, the essay makes some suggestions for concretisation.

Die Relevanz der Konstruktionsweise von Gütern hat in den vergangenen Jahren verstärkte Beachtung in der ökonomischen Literatur gefunden. Insbesondere die Konsequenzen einer modularen Gestaltung von Produkten rückten dabei in den Vordergrund. Dabei wird meist davon ausgegangen, dass sich aus einer modularen Güterstruktur eine modulare Organisationsstruktur des implementierenden Unternehmens ergibt. Die vorliegende Arbeit analysiert diesen postulierten Zusammenhang unter dem Aspekt vertikaler Integrationsentscheidungen. Dazu wird zunächst die These vertikaler Desintegration durch einen modularen Güteraufbau herausgearbeitet, um sie dann im Lichte etablierter Unternehmenstheorien einerseits und ingenieurwissenschaftlicher Methoden andererseits zu überprüfen. Die kritische Gegenüberstellung kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass die Desintegrationsthese in der Literatur für eine empirisch falsifizierbare Überprüfung zu allgemein formuliert ist. Die Arbeit macht anschließend einige Vorschläge zur Konkretisierung.
