Abstract

This work aims to investigate the influence of scandium on the corrosion properties of weldable AlZnMgCu(Sc) alloys. The investigation starts with performing standardised corrosion tests according to ASTM. Despite the very aggressive environment in these test solutions, differences in corrosion behaviour depending on the scandium content could be elaborated. These differences, however, are not unambiguous because the scandium-induced modifications of the microstructure have contrariwise influences on the corrosion properties. The corrosion behaviour of AlZnMgCu with and without small additions of scandium under open circuit conditions was investigated in detail. By means of microelectrochemical methods the macroscopic open circuit potential behaviour and the concomitant corrosion attack could be unambiguously interpreted. For the first time it was possible to measure potential and current transients as a result of MgZn2-phase dissolution. The role of this phase in the corresponding corrosion mechanism of AlZnMgCu is discussed in more detail. The anodic Mg2Si-Phase was observed to suffer selective magnesium depletion during immersion, while a potentially corrosion initiating micro-crevice is formed. The susceptibility of the two alloy systems for pitting corrosion was investigated by means of potentiodynamic polarisations. The main focus of this work was the investigation of single intermetallic phases while they are embedded into the alloy matrix. An influence of scandium on the electrochemical behaviour of the precipitate free alloy matrix could be demonstrated. The ternary Al3ScxZr1-x phase was found to be slightly cathodic with respect to the surrounding matrix of AA7010. Deleterious for the corrosion properties, however, is the new interface which is generated by forming this phase. Moreover, an interaction of scandium and chromium or manganese is to be expected. In summary, an influence of scandium on the corrosion properties was observed. This effect, however, is not unambiguous. It depends on the magnitude of the object of interest (microstructural feature, alloy or structural part). As the structural part is the most relevant technical magnitude, it can be concluded that the influence of scandium on the corrosion properties is slightly negative. The big advantage of scandium additions to AlZnMgCu alloys is that it renders these alloys weldable. Therefore two laser beam weldments were investigated concerning their corrosion susceptibility. Although scandium worsens slightly the corrosion properties of AlZnMgCu alloys, the weld-induced microstructural changes, such as the weld bead and the heat affected zone, have a more pronounced effect on the corrosion susceptibility of the whole assembly.
