Abstract

The present study deals with the modeling of non-linear behavior of common piezoceramic actuators, especially with regard to hysteresis and creep phenomena. The work focuses on the simulation of the non-linear behavior within the typical actuator working range. The modeling is based on the thermodynamically motivated approach of decomposing the dielectric polarization and the mechanical strain into reversible and irreversible parts. While the well-known linear piezoelectric material equations represent the reversible parts, mathematical operators emulate the irreversible behavior. Two different hysteresis operators are used for the hysteresis of the polarization. The Jiles-Atherton operator is efficient and features only five parameters. Therefore, it is relatively simple to identify. The Preisach operator, on the other hand, is much more flexible due to a variable number of parameters, resulting in a more complex parameter identification procedure. Time dependent creep and drift effects are modelled through drift operators. The weighted superposition of hysteresis and drift results in the complete model for the non-linear behavior of the dielectric polarization. Then the mechanical strain is computed from the modelled dielectric polarization through an approximately quadratic relationship. The study also presents the measurement setup and the algorithms for the parameter identification. Finally, the procedure is applied to examples of piezoceramic actuators. The usability of the developed model is demonstrated on piezoelectric bending actuators and stack actuators. The study finishes with the description of a piezoelectric linear stepper motor and a rotary motor both based on stack actuators.
