Abstract

Abstract in weiterer Sprache

As in other annual field crops, aphids are among the most important pests on lettuce. In this paper the species compositions of aphids and aphid predators on lettuce are described. Calculations on the parameters of aggregation allowed the derivation of a sequential sampling plan. The seasonally influenced population dynamics of aphids and aphid predators is described as a distinctive feature of the lettuce crop, which is cultivated in many successively batches during the vegetation period. Strips of faba beans offered an additional, time-shifted supply of aphids and, thus, acted as cheap and near-natural in-field insectaries for aphid predators. Spatiotemporal density counts on the strips and on the adjacent lettuce showed that the predators can be forced to move to the neighbouring lettuce crop through the purposeful withdrawal of these prey resources on the strips. Being the most important predator group, the dispersal of the coccinellid larvae is described with a diffusion model. Additionally to the increased predation pressure, the immigration of aphids to the lettuce was reduced in proximity to the strips. Both effects led to a small-scale and short-term reduction of aphid abundances near to the strips. The perceived seasonal influences on the population dynamics of the aphids and the system of biological pest control with the help of strip cropping are discussed particularly with regard to aphid control in horticultural field crops.
