• World Press Photo stellt den derzeit größten und bedeutendsten internationalen Wettbewerb für journalistische Fotografie dar. Was 1955 als kleine regionale Fotoausstellung in Amsterdam begann, hat sich in der Gegenwart zu einem herausragenden Referenzpunkt moderner Pressefotografie entwickelt. Jahr für Jahr wählt eine internationale Jury aus Zehntausenden von Bildeinsendungen das Pressefoto des Jahres. Gleichzeitig entsteht eine vielbeachtete Ausstellung, die eine sich stetig globalisierende Bildpublizistik in radikaler Weise wie in einem Fokus verdichtet. Das Pressefoto des Jahres steht so im Zentrum eines komplexen Komprimierungsprozesses, dessen Maßstäbe immer wieder Kontroversen provozieren. Diese Studie diskutiert, welche Eigenschaften Bilder zu World Press Photos machen. Empirisch werden alle seit 1955 in der Ausstellung gezeigten Fotos ausgewertet. Implizit die Bildauswahl beeinflussende Machtstrukturen lassen sich so statistisch sichtbar machen. Beginning in 1955 as a small regional photo exhibition in Amsterdam, the contest has developed in the present to a prominent authoritative point of modern press photography. Year after year an international jury chooses the World Press Photo of the Year from ten thousands of picture entries. At the same time there originates a much-noticed exhibition which condenses a steadily globalizing picture journalism in radical manner like in a focus.
