Abstract:

In the present study, the load-bearing behavior of thin-walled cold-profile overlap purlins (Z-profiles) made of steel sheet was investigated experimentally and numerically for bending around the weak axis and torsion. Based on numerical parametric studies different verification methods of the load-bearing behavior were developed and analyzed. Here, both methods for the approximate estimation of the limit load, as well as models for the determination of the exact internal forces Mz and Mω could be shown.
On the basis of various experimental investigations the geometrically and physically nonlinear bending behavior of coupled two-span beam was investigated in detail. Here it was shown that the shape instability of the right (overlying) beam in the field region caused the failure. In addition to the coupled multi-span beam continuous beams (without a coupling point) were additionally evaluated. Thus, the differences between both systems could be quantified. It turned out that continuous beams have a load factor of up to 20% higher than identical coupled beams. However, in first comparison calculations with a program known from practice (Schrag Stab FEM), a great saving potential was found for the design of coupled two-span beams. Using parametrical investigations on a previously verified finite element model, the bending behavior for structural application areas could be analyzed by varying the cross sections, span and load. It could be shown that, considering a 1.5-times bending stiffness in the coupling region, the limit load of the coupled two-span beam can be calculated in a suitable approximation (method 1). This has been possible for typical loadings, such as, in each case a single-cell load in the center of the field and a uniform line load for support widths of L = 3.50 m to L = 7.00 m. For the precise determination of the bending moments Mz (method 2) engineers models were developed in the form of framework models and applied to the results of the parametric investigations. For the development of the models, the actual course of the stresses σx were evaluated using the numerical simulation so that the bearing behavior can be depicted.
In addition to a coupled two-span beam, additional parameters were used to analyze the support behavior of coupled triple-span beam. In the FE simulations, it was shown that the load-bearing behavior of the FE is comparable in quality, especially in the coupling area. Here, parallels in the stress distribution and deformation behavior could be determined.
In addition to the experimental investigations of the bending behavior, the load bearing capacity due to torsional loads was also tested experimentally.
By means of a verified finite element model, parametric investigations were carried out with varying cross sections, span and load. Assuming pure warping torsion, it could be shown that the distribution of the bimoment Mω can be calculated in an appropriate manner using commercially available software. In the described procedure, the flange acts as a bending system. The bimoment is obtained here as the moment of the flange bending moments MG. In order to determine the flange bending moment, various models were developed and these were compared with the results from the parametric studies for their applicability.
For the bending as well as for the torsion, two models were formed, which accurately and at the same time capture the bending moments Mz and the bimoments Mω more precise.
