Abstract:

In this dissertation the author follows "The Making Of a Music City" using ethnographic approaches in a field with a variety of actors, displaying the making of the “Music-City Hamburg”. Different approaches to interpreting the term are defined by clustering the actors into groups and naming divergent goals and reasons for developing a music city. One of the guiding questions which the author continuously follows throughout the dissertation is: "Who wants to reach which goals with the development of a music city?".
At first, in a global overview, the phenomenon of music city is generally approached. Here, a distinction is made between music cities, which are considered a result of cultural attributions, as opposed to music cities, which seek such attribution as the goal of their city marketing and their cultural promotion.
After extensive field analysis, the actors were grouped into music-practical actors and non-music-practical actors, the conceptual pairing of music city Hamburg is divided into three versions of the music city: The focus of a music-practical version of the music city of Hamburg is the music itself. All components of the version aim to secure and promote the development of music in this city over the long term, both qualitatively and quantitatively.
A planned version of the city of music is pursuing the development of the city as its core goal, through music or the label of the city of music. The music is thus part of the processes that seeks to add economic value to urban structures. The aim of the positioning as a city of music is to promote and preserve urban associations in international city comparison.
Finally, in a representative version of the city of music the author discusses the city's musical narrative, which underlies the city's imaginations.
As a result, the central finding is that there is not one music city Hamburg. If one were to stick to the term, then there can only be several music cities in Hamburg, which results from the respective positions.
The music city Hamburg can be described as the result of a process and as a product. However, it remains an ambiguous product; depending on which group of actors is approached, the ideas of what the city of music is supposed to be, where it is, what it serves, and how it sounds are differentiated.
