The main objective of this thesis was the synthesis of soluble multicyclic or hyperbranched polymers (poly(ether)s, poly(ether sulfon)es, poly(ester)s and poly(thio ester)s) by means of a2+b4-polycondensations.
The polycondensations of TTSBI and different , bis(4 chlorocarbonylphenoxy) alkanes showed that soluble polymers were only accessible at a concentration >0.05 mol/L but an unexpectedly high cyclization tendency was found at a feed ratio of 1:1. The MALDI TOF MS mass spectra displayed two series of intensive peaks. The first series represents cyclic poly(ester)s (labeled C) and the second series consists of linear chain terminated by two TTSBI units (Lb). A slight excess of the acid dichlorides showed a minor influence on the molecular weight and product composition. While with the amines, TEA or TMP (used as HCl acceptors), soluble products were received, the experiments with EDPA or PMA ended in gelation. Furthermore, it was observed that the solubilities of the polymers depended on the way of synthesis. In all experiments with sebacoyl chloride, insoluble products were obtained.
Polycondensations of TTSBI and different , bis(4 chlorocarbonylphenoxy) alkanes, , bis(3 chlorocarbonylphenoxy)-alkanes or aliphatic dicarboxylic acids dichlorides were also conducted at a feed ratio of 1:2. Aliphatic dichlorides such as sebacoyl chloride or HDBC yielded gels. Aromatic dichlorides proved to be useful for syntheses of multicyclic Poly(ester)s (BNCN) in high yields.
Moreover, syntheses of Poly(ether)s from TTSBI and DFDPS or the cheeper and less reactive DCDPS were studied. In order to answer the question, if the length of the a2-monomers is important for cyclization, a second series of polycondensations was performed using BCSBP. The feed ratio from 1.0/1.0 to 1.0/2.0 was varied in all series to study the composition of products at different feed ratios. By comparison of the experiments with DFDPS and DCDPS, better results with regard to the cyclization tendency were obtained with the more reactive DFDPS. The MALDI-TOF-MS showed "perfect" multicycles as main products at use of a feed ratio of 1.9/1.0. The polycondensations with DCDPS showed only a small fraction of "perfect" multicycles. The DCDPS-unit might be too short and not flexible enough for complete cyclization reactions. The best results were obtained at polycondensations with the longer and more flexible BCPSB as a2-monomer.
Syntheses of other cyclic Poly(ether)s was performed by polycondensation of DCTB and bisphenol-M, bisphenol-P or 1,4-bis(4-hydroxyphenoxy)butane at a feed ratio of 1:1. All products with bisphenol P were insoluble, on the other hand all polymers with bisphenol M and EDPA or TMP as HCl acceptors were soluble.
Syntheses of multicyclic Poly(ether ester)s were also examined by polycondensations of EPE-3 or EPE-15 and aliphatic (sebacoyl chloride) or aromatic (phthaloyl, isophthaloyl or terephthaloyl) dicarboxylic dichlorides with pyridine at a feed ratio of 1:2. An alternative approach based on the cyclization of EPEs with dibutyltin dimethoxide followed by acylation with dicarboxylic dichloric acids, proved to be unsuccessful. The pyridine-promoted polycondensations of EPEs with acid dichlorides were more successful. Due to the higher content of ether group favoring gauche conformation EPE-15 proved to be more suitable for the preparation of soluble multicyclic polymers than EPE-3.
In addition, syntheses of multicyclic Poly(thio ester)s by polycondensations of PETMA or PETTP and different aliphatic (sebacoyl, suberic, adipic chlorides or 1,10-decane dicarboxylic chlorides) or aromatic (phthaloyl, isophthaloyl or terephthaloyl) dicarboxylic dichlorides were studied. The synthesis of soluble multicyclic Poly(thioester)s with aromatic dicarboxylic dichlorides was unsuccessful, whereas aliphatic dicarboxylic dichlorides gave satisfactory results.
All experiments with THBP as alternative b4-monomer were again unsuccessful. The reactions which tosylates or dibromites of alkanes did not provide any useful results.
In summary, the synthesis of soluble "perfect" multicyclic polymers in high yields is feasible by optimization of the reaction pathway. Polycondensations at a feed ratio of 1:1 delivered mainly cyclic products at relatively low concentration or gels at high monomer concentration. The synthesis of soluble hyperbranched polymers by means of a2+b4 polycondensations is very difficult. It was observed, that the aliphatic dicarboxylic dichlorides due to their favoured all-trans conformation have a lower cyclization tendency in comparison with aliphatic or aromatic dicarboxylic dichlorides. The theory of the kinetically controlled polycondensations formulated by Kricheldorf could therefore be confirmed once more by experiments.
