The goal of this work was to develop a method for the calculation of the nonlinear magneto-optical Kerr-effect in second harmonic generation (NOLIMOKE) of magnetic thin films. In opposite to previous works this was done completely on an ab initio basis. Thus it is possible to relate the optical phenomena directly to the material properties, which is shown here for Fe monolayers. Starting from the theory of nonlinear magneto optics by Hübner and Bennemann (Phys. Rev. B, Vol. 40, p. 5973 (1989)) the nonlinear susceptibilities of Fe monolayers are calculated using the ab initio FLAPW (full potential linearized augmented plane wave) method WIEN95 based on density functional theory. To realize this, the WIEN95 code was extended by spin-orbit coupling and the calculation of the dipole transition matrix elements using the wavefunctions. In addition an approximation is made to represent the film systems in the context of three dimensional translation invariance. The spectral dependence of the tensor elements of the nonlinear susceptibility of freestanding monolayers and doublelayers and their relation to the resulting intensities and Kerr angles is shown. In particular the fact, that the nonlinear Kerr angles are much larger than the linear ones, a consequence of the much strongersensitivity on magnetism of nonlinear optics in the thin film regime, is shown and analyzed. Furthermore a striking effect due to the hybridization of substrate and film is observed. The influence of spin-orbit coupling and magnetization(direction) as well as the symmetry properties of the susceptibilities, which are of major importance for the interpretation of NOLIMOKE and which are treated exact here within the numerical limits, are discussed.
