Based on surface tension measurements the morphology of polypropene blends with random copolymers of ethene and 1-butene or ethene with propene was optimized in order to achieve favorable mechanical properties. The ratio of the α- to the γ-modification of isotactic propene copolymers with 1-octene, 1-hexadecene and 4-methyl-1-pentene was controlled by variation of copolymer composition and crystallization temperature. The surface and interfacial tension measurements were carried out with the pendant drop apparatus and with the sessile drop equipment. Prior to carrying out the investigations on the surface tension of the poly(ethen-co-propene) (P(E-co-P)s) and of the poly(ethen-co-1-butene) (P(E-co-B)s) random copolymers over the whole range of composition, the influence of additives in commercial samples was studied. The comparison of the surface tension of isotactic polypropene (i-PP) with the surface tension of syndiotactic polypropene (s-PP) showed significant differences in the value of the surface tension. The observation of the immiscibility of these stereoisomers was confirming former results obtained by pVT-measurements and microscopic experiments. The comparison of the results obtained by pendant or sessile drop measurements with those obtained from pVT measurements lead to the conclusion that the best agreement of the prediction of the miscibility window obtained by microscopic observations was achieved by pVT measurements. The results on the morphology and the mechanical properties of the binary and ternary blends of isotactic polypropene and different poly(ethene-co-propene)s (80/20 wt-%) were complex. The highest values for the J-integral were obtained by blending i-PP with copolymers containing nearly identical amounts of ethene and propene in the copolymer. The content of the γ-modification of propene copolymers was tailored by the variation of the comonomer (4-methyl-1-pentene, 1-octene, 1-hexadecene), the content of the comonomer in the copolymer, and the crystallization temperatures. The content of the γ-modification increased with increasing crystallization temperature, or with increasing comonomer content.
