For this thesis, in all, eight outcrops and one well have been investigated, in order to establish and integrated litho-, cyclo- and magnetostratigraphy of the Lower Buntsandstein. In Central Germany, the about 300 m thick Lower Buntsandstein was deposited in the large intracratonic Central European Basin. The Lower Buntsandstein is subdivided into, in all twenty, 5 to 25 m thick sedimentary cycles, which consist of a sandy-oolitic lower and a pelitic upper part. These cycles can be correlated over considerable distances using wireline logs. Magnetostratigraphically, the Lower Buntsandstein comprises three normal and three reverse magnetozones. These magnetozones can be correlated within the Central European Basin and, moreover, with marine sections from the Tethyan and Boreal realms. According to these correlations, the Lower Buntsandstein spans the latest Permian to Early Triassic. The Permian-Triassic boundary is located within the lower part of a thick normal magnetozone.
