Abstract

In this thesis aspects of theoretical computing science and functional analysis are connected. Starting point is the problem of determining the inaccuracy arising from computer based calculations of approximate solutions for a specific family of systems of linear equations x-Ax=y, where A is an infinite matrix. Based on results by S. Heinrich an abstract model is developed, which yields estimates of the so-called minimal error of approximation for approximate solution of families of general operator equations. These estimates are given by Gelfand numbers of an operator determined by the setting of this problem. Applying the abstract model to the systems of linear equations described above one obtains estimates for the minimal error of approximation in terms of Gelfand numbers of tensor products of diagonal operators acting between 1_p-spaces. The second part of the thesis is devoted to the determination of the asymptotic behaviour of these Gelfand numbers. For this end deep results of A. Pietsch as well as B. Carl, E. D. Gluskin, R. Linde and C. Lubitz from the theory of s-numbers of operators are used and some of their proofs are simplified, improved or given in an alternative way. The asymptotic behaviour of Gelfand numbers of tensor products of diagonal operators is interesting in its own right. But the crucial point here is that knowing this behaviour one can determine the inaccuracy of approximate solutions for the family of systems of linear equations mentioned above.
