Abstract

This volume contains four papers which will be presented in a "thematic block" at the 14th International Congress of Slavistics, Ohrid, Macedonia, 10th-16th September 2008. Trasjanka and Surzyk are forms of mixed Belarusian-Russian or Ukrainian-Russian speech that have evolved from long-term contact situations in Belarus and Ukraine. These forms of mixed speech have so far been widely ignored in the academic discussion. Both are highly stigmatized forms of linguistic behavior in their respective countries, although they are widespread among millions of speakers. The volume offers general and specific insights on this topic by scholars from Belarus, Germany, Ukraine, and the U.S.A. The articles are in English, Belarusian and Ukrainian with English or Russian summaries.
