The subject of this thesis is operational maintenance in small-to-mid-sized firms. Maintenance isa function integral to every operation; it is essentially responsible for assuring the necessaryplantspecific availability and reliable functioning and effectiveness of its technical components. Therefore, it has special significance when it comes to improving performance. Not all firms recognizethis relationship and in the process, overlook a significant competitive factor. It is especially truethat in smaller firms, operational maintenance is accorded only passing attention with the result thatneglect of technical components is considered to be normal. Thus, small firms put themselves at asignificant disadvantage with respect to their larger competitors. Consideration of maintenance theory coupled with practical analysis of the situation at hand have madeit possible to be specific about particular situations. Cooperation between firms on a partnership basisis proposed as the starting point for improving operational maintenance at small-tomedium sized firms.Such cooperation provides a framework for additional decisions while providing a foundation for workingtogether on maintenance. Such „horizontal cooperation“ represents a possible approach to operationalmaintenance at small-to-mid-sized firms. The bundling of maintenance resources offers great potentialfor such firms, when compared with the alternative of in-house or outsourced maintenance. This thesisinvestigates the extent to which professional expertise, circumstances and motivation permit the commonuse of personnel capacities, replacement parts, equipment, tools, etc. - in other words, the extent towhich such a solution is practicable. The results are illustrated through case studies and scenariosdeveloped by simulating planned and unplanned maintenance. Horizontal maintenance cooperation by firms for the sake of common, multi-firm maintenance creates newpossibilities for performing operational maintenance at small-to-mid-sized firms. It is an importantstep on the path to responsible and professional maintenance management, especially for small-to-mid-sizedfirms.
