Abstract

The prevalence of heart failure will continue to increase. The new guidelines of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) replace the 2012 ESC guidelines for the diagnostics and treatment of acute and chronic heart failure and are adopted by the German Cardiac Society. These comments discuss the new aspects of the guidelines. These include the novel classification of heart failure into three groups: preserved (HFpEF), mid-range (HFmrEF) and reduced (HFrEF) left ventricular ejection fraction (LV-EF) as well as recommendations on the clinical use of the angiotensin receptor neprilysin inhibitor (ARNI) and new data on cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT). In addition, new recommendations on the diagnostics and treatment of acute heart failure are discussed.
