Abstract

The student lab, Our Spaceship Earth at the University of Cologne was established in 2010 with funding by the zdi-initiative of North Rhine-Westphalia. Topically, experiments related to the subjects sun, ecosphere, sensors, and water are provided. Students from junior high school (Mittelstufe) perform in one-day events interdisciplinary-designed experiments from one of these topics in class groups. These events are supervised by student teachers of the University. The events at high school level (Oberstufen-bereich) are addressed to particularly interested students. They perform more challenging experiments in vacation courses lasting several days with emphasis on the actual research in the Departments of Chemistry and Physics at the University. These courses intentionally go beyond the scope of possible school experiments. In part, these experiments are developed the context of final theses (Bachelor-or Master theses, or the 1st German state degree theses) and carried out by high school students together with student teachers from the university.
