Abstract

Following its subtitle Bildungsroman, the article focuses on how the core concepts of the genre, life and form, are being related and shaped in Judith Schalansky's Der Hals der Giraffe. By pointing out the interaction of biological and educational ideas, the novel draws a specific attention to the institutional and discursive forming of life and its determination through the corresponding orders of knowledge in the 20th century.
