Abstract

As a model type for an immersive sensation the article focuses on an experience of nature, in which the perceptive subject becomes absorbed by the overwhelming experience of the ocean and seems to lose itself in it. This corresponds to a relatively new paradigm by which nature ceases to be subject to human domination and exploitation and rather appears to exert some control over the human subject. The related inversion of power balances between subject and object involves a discarding of nature as a projection screen for human symbolism or emotions and instead approaches the element of water in its materiality and mediality. This is exemplified in John Luther Adams's composition Become Ocean (2013). Analyzing this composition, one becomes aware of immersive effects resulting from waveforms simultaneously moving at different paces. The harmonic-timbric modifications of the uninterrupted totality of sound constituting the composition become perceivable as an inner side of that sound. As such they require an attentive and receptive mode of listening as it has been described by Pauline Oliveros within her creative and meditation-related practice of Deep Listening.
