Abstract

Negrista poetry is a stream of Latin American poetry that developed in the Caribbean area starting in the early '20s. One of its main features is the development of a unique style based on the speech characteristics of Afro-Hispanic people and the Antilles, yet has a strong influence of music and Caribbean rhythms. These poems were used for the expression of a concept of people and a homeland which sought the fusion of African and Hispanic cultures alike, and in addition to the reflection, in many cases of revolutionary ideas that marked the evolution many Latin American countries in the last century. An important example of this is found in the work of Cuban Nicolás Guillén, surely the most representative poet of this movement. He was a poet true to these principles, and also tried in his work the subject of racism from many perspectives, not only as a critique of the attitude of the whites, but also at the same blacks and mulattoes who reneged on their identity.
