Facet theory : searching for structure in complex social, cultural & psychological phenomena [proceedings of the 14th International Facet Theory Conference]

Facet Theory (FT) is a systematic approach for coordinating theory and research that comprises the universe of observations, the population of respondents, and the range of observations. It stratifies these universes and integrates the design by means of a mapping sentence that guides the construction of items and the formulation of hypotheses. The result is a visualization of the structure of complex phenomena in a very intuitive way. – Facet Theory is the brainchild of the American-Israeli psychologist, sociologist, mathematician, and statistician Louis Guttman (1916-1987), who also authored some of the cornerstone advances in matrix algebra, measurement scales, factor analysis, and multidimensional scaling. Throughout his career he published numerous papers and books regarding seminal topics in mathematics and statistics, and he still is a widely cited author.
