Etablierung einer Injektionsnarkose mit Medetomidin, Ketamin und Butorphanol für den Humboldtpinguin (Spheniscus humboldti Meyen, 1834) in zoologischen Einrichtungen

Abstract

Im Rahmen dieser Studie wurde erstmals eine intramuskulär applizierte Injektionsanästhesie unter Verwendung von Medetomidin, Ketamin und Butorphanol bei 22 Humboldtpinguinen (Spheniscus humboldti) im Alter von 1 35 Jahren aus 3 zoologischen Einrichtungen untersucht. Die Zielsetzung bestand darin, eine Alternative zur Inhalationsnarkose zu etablieren, welche sich durch Sicherheit für Anwender und Patient, Zuverlässigkeit der Wirkung sowie Praktikabilität auszeichnen sollte. Dabei sollte mindestens eine tiefe Sedation erreicht werden, welche schmerzlose bis mäßig schmerzhafte Untersuchungen oder Behandlungen bei ausreichender Analgesie und Muskelrelaxation ermöglicht. In this study an intramuscular injectable anesthesia protocol for Humboldt penguins (Spheniscus humboldti) with the use of medetomidine, ketamine, and butorphanol has been examined in detail for the first time. The 22 penguins from 3 different zoological institutions included in the study were between 1 and 35 years of age. The goal of the study was to establish an injectable anesthesia protocol for the species as an addition to the well-established inhalant anesthesia. The main features of the protocol should include safety for both operator and patient, reliable anesthesia or at least deep sedation, as well as practicality of use. The level of sedation should facilitate painless and moderately painful medical procedures through the provision of sufficient muscle relaxation and analgesia.
