Kagbeni : Contributions to the geoecology of a typical village in the Kali Gandaki Valley

Abstract

The village of Kagbeni, situated in an altitude of 2820 m in a valley in central Nepal was one main focus of an interdisciplinary research programme founded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft that studied the settlement processes and the formation of states in the High Himalayas. This paper deals with the natural setting of the village, the effect of erosion processes and the phenomenon of regular valley winds ocurring in the region. Furthermore the agricultural use of the area including questions of water supply and irrigation and the problem of overexploitation of natural ressources are discussed. Das Dorf Kagbeni, in einem Tal in Zentralnepal in einer Höhe von 2820 m gelegen, war einer der örtlichen Schwerpunkte eines interdisziplinären Forschungsprogramms der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft. Ziel des Programms waren die Erforschung und Darstellung von Siedlungsprozessen und Staatenbildung im Hochhimalaya. Dieser Aufsatz beschreibt die natürlichen Gegebenheiten, den Einfluss von Erosion und regelmäßiger Talwinden auf das Dorf und seine Umgebung. Weiterhin werden die landwirtschaftliche Nutzung einschließlich Fragen der Bewässerung sowie die Problematik der Übernutzung natürlicher Ressourcen dargestellt.
