Der E-Mail-Roman : Zur Medialisierung des Erzählens in der zeitgenössischen deutsch- und englischsprachigen Literatur

Abstract

In den vergangen zwei Jahrzehnten lässt sich zunehmend beobachten, wie das Kommunikationsmedium E-Mail Einzug in den Roman erhält und dessen Strukturen grundlegend verändert. In Presse, Rezensionen und bisher wenigen wissenschaftlichen Publikationen wird daher vom neuen Genre E-Mail-Roman gesprochen, dessen narratologische Charakteristika und Ausprägungsformen es noch zu erforschen gilt. Die vorliegende Dissertation versteht sich als Antwort auf dieses Desiderat und untersucht als erste umfangreiche Publikation zu diesem Thema das emergente Genre E-Mail-Roman anhand ausgewählter Beispiele aus dem deutsch- und englischsprachigen Raum. Dabei werden die Modifikationen, die die Integration von E-Mails in die Romane mit sich bringt, sowohl auf story- als auch auf discourse-Ebene analysiert. Unter Rückgriff auf einschlägige IntermedialitätsforscherInnen wie Irina Rajwesky und Werner Wolf, werden intermediale Kategorien zur Beschreibung der Integration von E-Mails in die Romane entwickelt, wobei eine Dreiteilung von intermedialen Bezügen in intermediale Erwähnung, indirekte Wiedergabe und intermediale Imitation vorgenommen wird. Diese Kategorisierung lässt sich über den E-Mail-Roman hinaus ebenso zur Beschreibung weiterer Interferenzen zwischen neuen Medien und Literatur anwenden und ist daher im Forschungsbereich der Medialisierung des Erzählens anschlussfähig. Vor dem Hintergrund dieser Kategorisierung intermedialer Bezüge wird darüber hinaus eine Skala zur Systematisierung und Typologisierung des E-Mail-Romans entwickelt und das Genre gleichzeitig in zwei übergeordnete Ausprägungsformen unterteilt: hybride E-Mail-Romane und reine E-Mail-Romane.Ausgehend von der historischen Variabilität von Erzählstrukturen, stellt die Arbeit den E-Mail-Roman als Symptom seiner Entstehungszeit dar, indem herausgearbeitet wird, wie die Romane virulente Diskurse rund um die neuen Medien referieren und Themen wie Überwachung im Internet, Kontrollverlust über die Masse an E-Mails oder die Entstehung und Pflege sozialer Beziehungen über die virtuelle Kommunikation zu ihrem Gegenstand machen. Auf diese Weise identifiziert die Dissertation topoi und Plotstrukturen, die als paradigmatisch für das Genre des E-Mail-Romans verstanden werden können. Als Ergebnis der intermedialen und narratologischen Analyse werden sechs Funktionspotentiale von E-Mails im Roman herausgearbeitet. Auf der textinternen Ebene können E-Mails eine dramaturgische, eine explikative sowie eine instrumentalisierende Funktion erfüllen, während sie auf textexterner Ebene ein (re)präsentierendes, ein diskursives und ein selbstreflexives Funktionspotential tragen können. It has often been remarked that over the last two decades e-mails have become increasingly integrated into the novel and have thus reshaped not only its structure but also its plots. A number of scholars and critics have called for extensive scientific research into the new genre, which they refer to as the E-Mail-Novel . This dissertation is a reply to that call and focuses on this newly emerging genre within German- and English-speaking contexts. It does so by analyzing the modifications which e-mails have brought about in the novel on both the story and the discourse levels. In an effort to systematize the intermedial references to the communicative medium of e-mail in the novel, the study draws on categories from the work of Irina Rajewsky and Werner Wolf and reconfigures them according to their aptness for explicating features of the E-Mail-Novel. The intermedial categories developed in this dissertation i. e., mention, report and imitation also provide a basis for the analytical description of other interrelations between new media and literature and thus lend themselves to a theorization of the mediatization of narrative. Against this backdrop of different intermedial references, the study develops the idea of a scale for ordering and systematizing the varieties of the genre by simultaneously defining two major groups of e-mail-novels: hybrid and pure forms.Taking into account the historical variability of generic forms, the dissertation shows how the E-Mail-Novel depends on the cultural contexts in which it emerged by pointing out the ways in which the novels draw on contemporary issues. Among these are internet surveillance, the loss of control over the overwhelming amount of acts of virtual communication and the complexity of social relationships established and carried out via e-mail. Thus, the dissertation describes certain topoi and plot structures that can be regarded as paradigmatic for the E-Mail-Novel. In conclusion, the study maps six potential functions that e-mails can fulfill within the novel: on the intratextual level, intermedial references to e-mails can have a dramaturgical, explicative and instrumental potential while, on the extratextual level, they can fulfill representative, discursive and self-reflexive functions.
