Das kompositorische Schaffen Otto Nicolais (1810–1849) steht zweifelsfrei im Schatten seiner letzten Oper Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor. Dabei wurde er ursprünglich zum Kirchenmusiker ausgebildet und schuf ein breites Spektrum geistlicher Musik. Trotz der zentralen Bedeutung innerhalb seines Oeuvres rückten diese Kompositionen bislang nur vereinzelt ins Blickfeld der Wissenschaft. Mit der vorliegenden Arbeit wird diese Forschungslücke geschlossen und erstmals das gesamte geistliche Werk des früh verstorbenen Komponisten untersucht. Der Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf Genese und Rezeption der einzelnen Kompositionen, aber auch analytische Aspekte werden thematisiert. Es werden musikalische Vorbilder benannt und stilistische Eigenheiten herausgearbeitet, die in ihrer Gesamtschau helfen, das Werk Nicolais besser zu verorten. Dank neuer Quellenfunde können zugleich biographische Einzelheiten präsentiert werden, die zum Teil bisher fehlerhafte Annahmen richtigstellen. Eine wesentliche Informationsquelle zu Leben und Werk Nicolais stellen seine Briefe dar; der Arbeit ist daher ein aktualisiertes Briefverzeichnis beigegeben. Zudem sind mehr denn zwanzig Briefe Otto Nicolais wiedergegeben, darunter bislang unbekannte Briefe an die preußischen Könige Friedrich Wilhelm III. und Friedrich Wilhelm IV.
The compositional oeuvre of Otto Nicolai (1810-1849) is doubtless overshadowed by his last opera, The Merry Wives of Windsor. Yet his original training had been in the field of church music and he composed a wide range of sacred music. Despite the central place these compositions occupy in his output, until now they have only sporadically received musicological attention. The present work aims to close this gap and, for the first time, to survey and describe the entire body of sacred works finished by the composer before his untimely death. While the focus will be on the genesis and reception of individual compositions, analytical aspects will also be investigated. In order to place Nicolai’s work in a firm historical context, his musical influences and his own stylistic traits will be explored as well. On the basis of recently discovered sources, some biographical details will also be examined, in part to correct previous, incorrect assumptions about his biography. Nicolai's letters are a vital source of information about his life and work; therefore an updated catalog of his letters is appended to this study. In addition, more than twenty letters are reproduced here, including previously unknown letters to two Prussian Kings, Friedrich Wilhelm III and Friedrich Wilhelm IV.
